Revival

I started reading Stephen King’s Revival last fall after it’s release. Unfortunately several life situations took me away from my read and it came due at the library. I immediately reserve it again, but being that it is a new book it has taken this long to make it’s way back to me. In the meantime I did something I rarely do – read reviews before I read the book.

The reviews led me to this quote, “” King has always been generous in acknowledging the inspiration for his fiction. With “Revival,” he names Arthur Machen’s “The Great God Pan” (1894), one of the greatest supernatural tales ever written.” Ah ha! I’ve never read that and, further, I don’t know Arthur Machen’s work. My research tells me that Machen was also followed by H.P. Lovecraft.

Time for me to delve further into the book web even though I’m a mere fifty pages into my current book. I’ve reserved it at the library.

Also, my supernatural phase is starting early this year. Usually I reserve it for fall!

I am here because…

I read. I read a lot.

I don’t always read novels. I don’t always read fiction.

I make connections when I read. Connections not much different than a hyperlink on a digital text. I make so many connections that I sometimes lose track of what I was reading when I started making the connections. Then I find myself picking up a book or other text that looks, sounds, or feels familiar. I read it again until I come to the place where I started making connections and abandoned the text/book and the “aha” moment hits me.

I think there must be something magical about this mental hyper-linking. I am a 52 year old who works closely with  the written word. The shelves in my mind are graced with great literary works, trashy novels, blogs, textbooks, magazines, audiobooks, self-help books, newspapers, and even my own journals. I lead a word-rich life.

There is something missing. I know someday I will find it in the connections I make when I am caught in the book web. More accurately, when I am caught in the web of words that I read.

Caught in the Book Web is a new space for me to track those connections. Down the rabbit hole, out in space, a digitized world in the future, a castle in the past….who knows…maybe it will lead me to my real grown up calling.

Let’s start with what my current text:

audiobook – The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

paper (adult fiction) – Hearts in Atlantis by Stephen King

paper (ya fiction) – Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

private journal – verucas_chaos

social network – facebook
